Barry Read at 3-D has a background in Architectural, Film and Television design.
In the 1980s he was a Set Designer at BBCtv in London before returning to New Zealand to design and build an energy self-sufficient house. In the mid-90s he worked as John Britten's Architectural Designer on John's visionary transport hub for Christchurch, Cathedral Junction and designed the Treacy House at Clearwater in Christchurch among other architectural projects. In 1996 he was employed as a a storyboard artist and then designed the Natural Environments exhibitions Awesome Forces about our 'Shaky Isles' and Mountains to the Sea about our flora & fauna for Te Papa/ Museum of NZ.
Set Design for film in NZ has included the King Kong remake and Hollywood's Aliens in the Attic and SkyRunners.
He has designed a wide range of productions for TVNZ including What Now? and was the Production Designer/HOD on Shortland Street at the end of the 1990s. In the early part of this decade he designed Fair Go, Sunday and Face-to-face as well as productions for SKYtv and MaoriTV.
Events design has included work for TelecomNZ and Strange Plants for the 2002 Christchurch Festival and the Giant Rugby Ball that was erected in Paris and London to advertise the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Since then he has produced the initial concept visuals for 'The Cloud' - situated on Queens Wharf and other details for the RWC 2011.
After the Feb 22 earthquake in Christchurch he worked with Warwick Bell to produce two responses - The Fly, see link to page above, and 'Lean2' (© BBR 2011) - an add-on room utilising very simple structure and insulation wrapped in a cost-free membrane that can be incorporated into the (finally) refurbished house in the future.
